History

  • Original grant of 669 acres to John Wait in 1837 when property called "Broulee".

  • The two-storey double brick residence was reportedly built by Anglican rector of Berrima Rev Hyatt Wyatt.
  • In 1862 the property was rented to the Sisters of the Order of St Joseph.
  • In 1869 the rural property was sub-divided and "Kalaurgan House" was jointly acquired by landholder and developer Walter Morrice and Robert Pemberton Richardson Co-founder of Real Estate firm Richardson and Wrench
  • Although a lease was not registered it's likely that the property was rented out in the 1870's
  • In 1883 the building became St Joseph's convent and school.
  • Mother Mary MacKillop went to Moss Vale in 1884 and in that year the building was opened as St Joseph's convent and school.
  • Supposedly Mother Mary MacKillop lived at "Kalaurgan House"
  • It is not clear when the single-storey weatherboard addition was constructed however it broadly covers the period 1850-1900.
  • The property has had several owners in the last century as a residence as well as a boarding house and bed & breakfast establishment during this period the parcel of land was also used as a poultry farm and for market gardening.
  • Sometime between 1966 and 1988 the name was changed to "Marlborough" - the name "Kalaurgan House" was re-instated about 1988.
