The National Trust of NSW is governed by a board comprising of twelve elected directors and an Executive Director. The board elects a president, a deputy president and a treasurer.

President - Ian Carroll OAM
President - Ian Carroll OAM BA LLM(Hons)
Board member since: 2008
Career history: Ian Carroll is a former corporate and commercial law Partner of National legal firm Clayton Utz. Now a company director, he is a Director of Zurich Financial Services Australia Limited and its subsidiaries, and is or has been a director of other companies in the insurance, reinsurance, manufacturing, industrial and wholesaling sectors. He has previously held positions in various not-for-profit organisations, including President of UNICEF Australia, State Library Ambassador to the Legal Profession, and Member of the Council of Knox Grammar School, and has been honorary legal adviser to a number of such organisations.
Attributes he brings to the Trust: Ian is committed to the preservation of our built, natural and cultural heritage, including our indigenous and multi-cultural heritage, and to promoting heritage values to governments and the community, especially our younger and multi-cultural communities. He firmly believes that good governance and strategic and risk management of not-for-profit organisations are essential to the attainment of their worthy objectives.

Deputy President - Donald M Godden

Career history: 1967-75 Principal Field Investigator, Smithsonian Institution – UNSW Pakistan project; 1975-95 Senior lecturer, School of Architecture, UNSW; 1995-98 Director, Master of the Built Environment (Building Conservation) Course UNSW; 1985-99 Principal, Godden Mackay Logan (and predecessors) Heritage Consultants; 1999-2002 Chairman, Godden Mackay Logan, Heritage Consultants; 2002 to present, Grazier.
Attributes he brings to the Trust: An in-depth understanding of the importance of conserving the cultural (built) and natural heritage; over three decades of experience in identifying, assessing and providing comprehensive policies for the conservation of items of the environmental heritage; the ability to monitor and assess Conservation Management Plans prepared for the future care and management of the National Trust properties; the ability to assess the significance of the industrial heritage of the state and to make recommendations for its retention and conservation.

William Holmes à Court

Career History: IBM, Capita, Ernst & Young, Procuity
Attributes he brings to the Trust: Over 30 years of management experience in information technology, finance and accounting. Currently, as the Managing Director of Procuity he assists senior executives adopt best business practice focussing particularly on service oriented operations and business intelligence. William is currently the interim Executive Director of the National Trust.

Julian Bickersteth

Treasurer - Julian Bickersteth
MA Oxford University 1980; Diploma in conservation, West Dean College, UK 1982; Fellow of the International Institute for Conservation; Fellow of the Royal Society for Arts; Vice President, Australian Decorative and Fine Art Societies.
Board member since: 2001
Career history: Conservation Department, Powerhouse Museum 1984 -1986; Managing director, Campbell Conservation 1986 – 1991; Managing director, International Conservation Services 1991 – present.
Attributes he brings to the Trust: Julian’s professional life is in the heritage conservation world, where he runs a conservation and museum planning company. He trained as a furniture conservator, worked at the Powerhouse Museum, and then established a company in response to the interest created in heritage by the Bicentenary in 1988. Julian has completed the Australian Institute of Company Directors board directors course, and having been on the boards of a number of heritage, conservation and museum organisations believes in the value of good governance and strategic planning in not-for-profit bodies. He also brings useful professional experience, especially in the care and management of the Trust properties and their collections.

Robyn Christie

Robyn Christie

Board member since: 2001
Career history: Robyn Christie is a heritage consultant who has specialised in the preparation of historical reports. She is a member of Australia ICOMOS; the Museums Association; an associate of the Professional Historians Association; and a student member of the RAIA. She has a strong academic and practical background, first working with the National Trust as a curator at the S.H. Ervin Gallery and then the Museum of Australian Childhood over a period of 10 years. Heritage contracts have included work at Susannah Place, Elizabeth Bay House, Juniper Hall, St Mary’s Cathedral and Central Railway Station.  Robyn is currently completing a postgraduate degree in architecture to investigate better designed contexts for heritage sites and character areas.  She is a member of five Trust committees and actively involved with her local community through the Hunters Hill Trust and represents the National Trust on the Council’s Conservation Advisory Panel.
Attributes she brings to the Trust: Having been closely associated with the Trust since 1982, Robyn brings a unique understanding of the history and culture of the Trust and the issues it has faced for over 25 years.

Janine Kitson

Janine Kitson

Career history: Teacher since 1982 – Secondary: English History; English as a Second Language; English as a Foreign Language Teacher in Japan; Secondary & Primary Educational Consultant for the Samoan Government;  Secondary & Primary Curriculum Writer for NSW Department of Education;  Primary:  English as a Second Language;  Classroom Teacher. Elected Councillor on Ku-ring-gai Council, 2000-2004. Company Secretary of Australian Dance Institute, a registered training organisation that provides qualifications for dancers and dance teachers. President, David G. Stead Memorial Wildlife Research Foundation of Australia. NSW Teachers Federation representative, NSW National Parks Association.    
Attributes she brings to the Trust?
Janine has been an active member of many environmental and heritage groups.  She sees herself as an educator, community activist and environmentalist. Janine’s two main achievements have been: the redesign and relocation of lifts at Gordon Railway Station that balanced heritage with modern improvements, 2003-2004; and helping to save the St Ives Blue Gum High Forest –lobbied the State and Federal Government to purchase 100-102 Rosedale Road, two private blocks of land in the centre of the St Ives Blue Gum High Forest, 2004-2008.

Helen Lochead

Helen Lochhead

Board member since: 1997
Career history: Helen is Assistant Government Architect, with over 20 years experience in architecture and urban design, focusing on delivering complex large-scale projects. She has received numerous design awards, including from the National Association of Women in Construction and the Australian Institute of Architects.
Helen oversees architectural and specialist design services in the Government Architect’s Office and provides design direction and review within the GAO to promote high quality and sustainable architecture, urban design, landscape design and heritage projects. She also provides strategic advice to the Government Architect and clients. Helen has lectured extensively and is a published author. She serves on the UNSW Campus Design Advisory Panel, the deputises for the Government Architect on the NSW Architects Registration Board and is alternate member for the Government Architect on the Central Sydney Planning Committee. Helen is a member of the Australian Institute of Architects and past Chair of the Urban Design Committee.
Attributes she brings to the Trust: Helen has a broad range of experience in planning architecture landscape and heritage projects at varying of scales.  She has a detailed understanding of planning and government processes as well as over 10 years on the Trust Board.

Peter Lowry

Peter Lowry OAM
Peter Lowry LLB is a Company Director involved in property investment, urban planning, restoration of heritage buildings and housing development. He is a Member of the Board of the Sydney Harbour Federation Trust, the Planning Research Centre of the University of Sydney and is a Director of the Ensemble Theatre and the Seaborn Broughton Walford Foundation (a charitable trust to assist the performing arts.)

Maureen Pike

Maureen Pike
Born in Kent, UK. After business college she worked at Australia House in London for the Commonwealth Bank. Being an adventurer she came to Australia in 1962, married Daryl and had three boys. She moved to Bathurst in 1976. Maureen has been involved in voluntary work during most of her life. She has held the positions of Secretary and Chair of the Cathedral Parish Council. She and has served the Trust as Vice President, President and Inspection Secretary of the Central West Women’s Committee. She has also been the Executive of Friends of the ABC. In a working capacity she has also worked with disadvantaged youth in Sydney .

Ross Griffith

Professor Ross Griffith

Board member since: 2008
Career history: Technical management positions with Yarra Falls Ltd; Bradford Cotton Mills; Bonds Industries Ltd; 33 year academic career at University of New South Wales, retiring in 1997 as Professor of Wool Technology and Head of the School of Fibre Science and Technology; Director, The Smith Family, 1985 – 2003; Council Member, The Smith Family, 2003 – to date; Principal, Griffith Services (Consultants), 1997 – to date, serving the textile, clothing and related industries; Director, Bardwell Valley Golf Club, 2006 – 2009. Emeritus Professor, UNSW; Adjunct Professor, RMIT University.
Attributes he brings to the Trust: Ross has a lifelong interest in Australia’s history and heritage. He brings experience in management of complex public institutions, notably in the not-for-profit sector. His personal interests in art, architecture, design and music fit with the aspirations of the National Trust for the preservation of our heritage and culture.

Peter Lowry

Martijn Wilder
BEc(Hons) Sydney University 1989; BLaw(Hons) ANU 1992; awarded a Commonwealth Trust Scholarship to undertake an LLM at Jesus College, Cambridge 1993; participant in the prestigious  research program on Trade & Environment at the Hague Academy of International Law 1994; admitted in the High Court and Federal Courts of Australia and the NSW Supreme Court.
Board member since: 2009
Career history: Martijn was a lawyer at Allen Allen and Hemsley from 1995 to 1999 and then joined Baker & McKenzie in 1999, becoming a Partner in 2000. He now runs Baker & McKenzie's global Environmental Markets Practice.
Attributes he brings to the Trust: Legal skills, expertise in environmental trends that are impacting on our natural heritage such as climate change, expertise in relation to bush heritage and carbon sink projects and programmes and expertise in being on other boards on community organisations.
