Bushland Management Services

Our aims

  • Biodiversity conservation, ecological restoration,
  • Conservation of cultural  heritage artefacts (Aboriginal and European),
  • Enhancement of the visual and landscape amenity of bushland for the community, so that people can experience and enjoy the natural environment for activities such as walking and bird watching,
  • Conservation of the educational and scientific values of bushland.

Services & Expertise

The National Trust of Australia (NSW) offers expertise in a wide range of services including:

Preparation of site specific management plans recommending appropriate integrated weed management strategies and methods to achieve successful long-term results.

Weed control using a variety of integrated methods including manual control, chemical and mechanical control methods (brushcutting/slashing).

We plan strategically to reduce degrading impacts on “bushland” sites through weeding, erosion control, revegetation etc. using best practice methods.

Recent projects include:

  • Planning and implementation of buffer and corridor planting using indigenous species.
  • Reconstruction of “natural areas” e.g. reinstatement of creekline vegetation.
  • Revegetation projects have been carried out recently at a variety of sites including Bardwell Creek (Bexley North), Orphan School Creek (Bossley Park), Quarry Branch Creek (Northmead), Lower Ponds Creek (Rydalmere) and Manly Creek (Manly Vale).

Management of the impacts of soil erosion & sedimentation - soft solutions for drainage problems, including construction of small silt basins and energy dissipaters.

Pre and post fire weeding - preparing sites for ecological/hazard reduction burns to encourage post fire regeneration. Pre and/or post-fire activities have been carried out recently at Ludovic Blackwood Memorial Sanctuary (Beecroft); New South Wales Golf Course (La Perouse) and the Bird Sanctuary at Centennial Park.

Habitat conservation – restoration strategies are planned with consideration to retention or provision of habitat for fauna. Exotic flora species that provide habitat for native fauna are not removed until suitable habitat is restored in adjacent areas.

Recent projects requiring special attention to the fauna of the area include:

  • Eve Street Wetlands, Arncliffe and Botany Wetlands (migratory birds, Green and Golden Bell Frog)
  • Fred Hollows Reserve, Randwick (the Glebe Gully Skink)
  • Cabramatta Creek Bat Colony, Cabramatta (Flying Foxes)
  • Gray’s Point, Beetle (Mennipus fugitivus)

Educational services - guided walks, talks to school groups, educational material eg. posters. Recent educational projects include guided walks in Pittwater and Beecroft.

Surveys - vegetation mapping, species surveys, quadrat establishment and monitoring. BMS has recently conducted comprehensive vegetation surveys in several reserves at Blacktown and Ryde.

Preparation of management plans for bushland areas, assembling information from liaison with relevant stakeholders (landowners, conservation agencies, government departments etc) surveys and assessment of bushland. The plans comply with the principals of the Australian Natural Heritage Charter and requirements of relevant legislation. BMS has recently prepared management plans for bushland reserves in Beecroft and Leura.
