Collits' Inn,
Collits’ Inn was established in 1823 by a former convict, Pierce Phigginton Collits and his wife Mary. Collits was born in Kilkenny, Ireland, in 1771 or earlier. He and Mary were transported to Australia on a convict ship in 1801. They had two small girls, Maria and Sarah. In 1803, Mary received a grant of land on the Nepean. The authorities allowed Pierce to work for her as her convict servant. He was ultimately pardoned in 1811. Like many former convicts, Pierce made a good life for himself in Australia. Whereas in England he was a lowly porter and petty thief, in Australia he rose to prominence. He became Chief Constable in the Penrith area and was active in local affairs. Accommodation Collits’ Inn offers a variety of accommodation choices. There are three beautiful bedrooms at the Inn; The Governor's Room Governors Brisbane, Darling and Bourke all stayed at the Inn between 1823 and 1832. The room has attractive rural views; kangaroos can often be seen on the hillside in the evenings. The Blue Room is painted in the early colour of Regency Blue. We think this room dates back to 1823, when the Inn was first built, but contains reminders of every stage of the Inn’s history. There’s the original fireplace, a built-in wardrobe from the early 1900s, postcards from before WWI, and framed linoleums from c. 1910 and 1925. The Twin Room This room is limewashed in a beautiful greeny-blue, the same colour as the original kalsomine. The early c.1910 linoleum is framed above the mantelpiece. There are also two self-contained cottages; The Stables This early building, thought to have been the early stables for the Inn, is now restored as a charming and historic two bedroom cottage. It is just beside the Inn. Collits’ Inn features a superb restaurant that has been recognised by the public, the critics and the industry alike. Awards now too numerous to list since opening in January 2002 include:
Functions Collits’ Inn has a large barn that provides a wonderful, historic atmosphere for weddings, functions and other events for up to 100 people. The barn features brick paving, tall wooden poles and a corrugated iron roof. Rustic farm implements adorn the corrugated iron walls, which can be opened out to reveal spectacular views of Mt York, where the first settlers descended the western slopes of the Blue Mountains. The barn’s tables were hewn from pine trees that stood in front of the Inn for over 100 years. This is a unique venue for weddings, celebrations, parties, wine tastings, lectures, poetry readings, film shoots or musical events. Things To Do One of the most perfect things to do at Collits' Inn is to relax and unwind while soaking up the atmosphere and enjoying the superb restaurant.
