***SOLD***

Dungaleer sits on the hill of Old Bolwarra, a leafy historic precinct that overlooks Maitland and the Hunter River. This distinguished home is a classic example of a fascinating period of Australia’s architectural history which saw the English Queen Anne Revival and the Arts and Crafts Movement come together to be known as the Australian Federation period. There are drawings and photographs of Dungaleer in the architectural collections of the Museum of Sydney and the University of Newcastle (Pender Archives). It has been extensively photographed for inclusion in architectural books.

Picturesque
Dungaleer has a traditional, beautiful facade with a conical tower, sweeping verandahs and elaborate timberwork. The verandahs have ornate gable fascias and spindlework. A copy of the architect’s drawings hang in its leadlight encased vestibule. It is deemed as significant by the Heritage Council of New South Wales and Maitland City Council and is noted by the National Trust of Australia.

History
In 1885 Messieurs J and W Logan bought allotments of the Bolwarra Estate that were part of a land grant made to Mr John Brown in 1822. Dungaleer was designed for this elevated land by renowned architect J.W. Pender in 1906 and built as a sophisticated residence for 2000 pounds for Mr David Logan in 1908. Other Pender designed houses include Scone’s Belltrees (1906) and Maitland’s Benholme (1884) and Cintra (1878).

Setting
The house is set well back on it’s 1,870 square-metre block, surrounded by gardens with 100 year old trees that have become district markers over time. The exterior of the house has bands of brickwork and roughcast surfaces typical of the Arts and Crafts Movement. Above its slate roof are the extraordinary bandaged chimneys complete with terracotta pots and original ovolo profile moulds.

Description
It is well proportioned and designed with 4/5 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, expansive dining room, sitting room and sunroom. It has the original high, ornate pressed metal ceilings. The decorated 5 fireplaces are in working order. It was built with a servant’s room, now an ensuite with dressing room. The original servant’s call system for each room still operates with the indicator board located in the large chef’s kitchen near the pantry. Additional features include a delicate hall gaslight and pull cords for lights throughout. There is an internal laundry and period summerhouse in the garden.

Guest accommodation & solar pool
The current owners have tastefully added a large, landscaped solar heated pool as well as separate guest accommodation and bathroom facilities. There is garaging for 2 cars with additional off street parking.

Location
Dungaleer is a beautiful home recognised as one of the finest of its period in the Hunter Valley. It is located 2 hours from Sydney, 35 minutes from Newcastle, 40 minutes from Port Stephens beaches and 30 minutes from the Pokolbin vineyards. Minutes away, through farmlands is the historic river port of Morpeth.

Currently a comfortable family home, Dungaleer would also suit as a grand bed and breakfast establishment. It is on the market with PRDnationwide Hunter Valley 49342000.
