Welcome to our e-news!
With 80,000 members, and 26,000 in NSW, the National Trust of
Australia (NSW) is the largest non-government community heritage
organisation in Australia. We
are continually looking for ways and means to enhance member benefits
– key to this is communication. Members receive our high quality
magazine, Reflections,
together with a quarterly Calendar of Events, and we are expanding and
improving our web site to make it more effective.
Our fortnightly enews
is a timely and cost effective way to keep you up-to-date with current
news and events. It will always be short, with links to the web so that
it is quick and easy to read. In conjunction with our website, it
allows us to be more efficient and to provide better member benefits.
So please let us know if your email details change and pass enews
on to others who you think might be interested in hearing about
heritage news and what the Trust is doing.

Productivity Commission threatens heritage
protection
The Productivity Commission has issued a draft report into
Historic Heritage recommending that listing of privately owned places
should only occur where there is a voluntary conservation agreement
made with the owner. This would particularly affect items and
places listed at the local level, with councils negotiating the proposed
agreements only with willing owners. Development pressure will
be almost impossible to combat with this regime in place.
A series of public hearings
will be held across Australia
beginning in Sydney on
31 January – 1
February 2006. The National Trust of
Australia (NSW) will present at 9am on
31 January. The full report can be downloaded from the Productivity
Commission’s website at www.pc.gov.au/inquiry/heritage
and comments can be made to our Discussion Board at www.nsw.nationaltrust.org.au.
The Trust’s response to the draft report will be available
shortly.

2006 Heritage Festival – bringing
industrial heritage to life
This year’s National Trust Heritage Festival, themed
“Industrial Heritage: Our Working Lives”, will be held
from 1 – 16 April 2006. The Festival will explore places,
people, organisations and structures that show the history and
significance of everything from production, agriculture and mining to
transport and services, technology, manufacturing and the military,
to the building industry and maritime activities.
A unique program of over 400 events will be held across NSW,
with the Festival playing host to everything from architectural
discovery tours, exhibitions and talks addressing our changing urban
landscape, an exploration of maritime sites such as old submariners'
tunnels, lighthouses and old convict built shipyards, to the earliest
remains of some iconic thriving industrial areas such as the Hunter,
Illawarra and Goulburn regions. There will also be a photography
competition, music concerts along with art exhibitions, talks and
community fairs.
Go to www.nsw.nationaltrust.org.au/events/festival
or call the National Trust on 02 9258 0123 for details.

Avoca Beach Theatre Threat
The beautiful heritage theatre on Avoca Beach
has come under threat following a vote by Gosford City Council to
approve an amending cause to their Local Environmental Plan allowing
the construction of a multi-story redevelopment of the theatre in a
Residential Zone. This was despite the council receiving a petition
from 4,200 people opposing the redevelopment and objections from both
the National Trust and the NSW Heritage Office to the scale and bulk
of the development.
The rezoning will now go to the Minister for Planning, Frank
Sartor, for his approval. However, the Minister has recently
announced that local councils would not be able to approve
developments of this scale within 100 metres of the coastline, and
with the huge public objection, the National Trust is hopeful that
approval will not be given.

collections across the country celebrate their forty year friendship,
reflecting their shared spirit of adventure and desire to create art.
