In this first issue for 2007, I am delighted to announce that one of the National Trust’s signature properties, Old Government House, Parramatta, has been nominated for World Heritage Listing; please see the item below. This issue also features a range of exciting current and upcoming events: the record-breaking Reg Mombassa exhibition at National Trust S H Ervin Gallery; the launch of our Treasure of the Trust series – lunch with the queen of Australian cuisine, Margaret Fulton on 7 March; and our first National Trust Awareness Day on 18 March. It’s a great opportunity for a fun day out at the Trust Centre, Observatory Hill, happily coinciding with the gala celebrations for the 75th anniversary of the Harbour Bridge. Our 2007 Heritage Festival, with its strong environmental themes, culminates on that day (see item below). A final note: As you know the Trust is a charity. We need your support now more than ever as we manage a situation in which our expenses significantly exceed revenue. Please consider joining, supporting our fundraising events, or donating. With you, we’ll continue to protect our environment and cultural heritage for ever, for everyone.

leaf World Heritage Nomination for Old Government House

On Friday 12 January the former Federal Minister for the Environment and Heritage, Senator Ian Campbell, announced that 11 sites representing Convict Heritage across Australia are being nominated as a ‘serial listing’ for the World Heritage List. The list includes Old Government House and the Governor’s Domain at Parramatta. The Domain is represented by Parramatta Park and together they constitute the ‘command post’ of the convict system. The site is a ‘powerful symbol of the colony of NSW, the inter-connections with convict sites in other colonies and the development of the nation’. For more on the nomination, see www.deh.gov.au.

leaf  Heritage Festival - Places in Context: Natural & Cultural Landscapes 3-18 March

With over 430 exciting events across the state – talks, garden and architectural tours, exhibitions, concerts, family open days - the 27th National Trust Heritage Festival promises to be the biggest and best yet. The theme couldn’t be more timely. The festival will look at natural landscapes from perspectives such as sustainability and development, climate change and water conservation. This theme intersects with our cultural landscapes - the community’s interaction with places and their social histories. The festival will send a message that government, business and developers need to understand “places in context” – wholistically - to ensure that our cultural and environmental heritage are protected. A highlight of the festival, the EnergyAustralia National Trust Heritage Awards, will be presented at the Awards Luncheon, The Westin, Sydney, on Monday 12 March. Please see the full festival program www.nsw.nationaltrust.org.au/events/festival
