As many of you know, Sunday 18 March was the first National Trust Day, and I am happy to report it was a resounding success. We welcomed about 40,000 visitors to the Trust Centre for a day of fun, food, music, exhibitions, and information about the Trust and its work in conserving the environment and cultural heritage. We were fortunate to coincide with 75th Bridge anniversary and bridgewalk, which helped bring many to our door click for more. Heartfelt thanks to all our wonderful supporters, listed here, and our fabulous volunteers - we simply could not have done it without you. And thank you to everyone who visited on the Day. All of us at the Trust were deeply heartened at the level of interest and support for our mission. Two initiatives we launched on the Day were our exclusive Bridgewalk Certificate and Time Capsule Cards. Both certificate and cards are still available; see the items below. By buying a certificate or card you help support the Trust continue its work.

Conservation Issues

Sustainability spotlight

Our new feature will look in brief at a different environmental issue or theme each time relating heritage to climate change.

As many of you know, this Saturday 31 March has been designated Earth Hour. Major councils and corporations throughout Greater Sydney will throw the light switches at 7.30pm, plunging Sydney into darkness – a symbolic gesture to highlight our excessive use of energy and to encourage energy efficiency. During the hour the energy saved will be measured, and the beauty of the night sky, normally obscured by light pollution, will be visible (weather permitting). The National Trust is a registered Earth Hour supporter and will join the effort by switching off the lights on Observatory Hill. We encourage everyone to join - turn off your lights at 7.30pm and be part of this momentous event.  After all, environmental sustainability is the issue of our time. A healthy environment is the most important heritage we can leave the next generation. From the Trust’s perspective, it is the fundamental context for other forms of heritage – built and cultural – that we work to protect.

leaf Urban Conservation Area - Croydon

The Trust has urged Burwood Council to list the Shaftesbury East Study Area as an Urban Conservation Area on its Local Environmental Plan rather than individual properties within the area. While many properties are certainly worthy of individual listing they would be better preserved and presented within the context of similarly-scaled properties. The Area was listed by the National Trust in 1995.

leaf St Peters Church, Watsons Bay

The National Trust has strongly opposed proposed additions to the church hall adjoining St Peters Church, Watsons Bay which would fatally compromise the setting of the church. The addition would increase the area of the hall by 4.5 times  its existing size and would dominate the site.

leafM6 Expressway promoted again

The National Trust was disappointed to hear that plans for construction of the M6 through Royal National Park and the green corridors of Sutherland and Rockdale were again being promoted.  The duplication of the Cronulla to Sutherland railway line now being undertaken will have a greater potential to transport large numbers of people at lower cost to the environment and free up scarce road space.
