Tasmanian Pulp Mill Decision

At its meeting on the weekend, the National Trust (NSW) Board passed a resolution expressing its concern about the process by which the Tasmanian Tamar Valley Pulp Mill was approved. The approval decision highlights the weaknesses in the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act in terms of Commonwealth involvement with the protection of both natural and cultural heritage throughout Australia.

The decision should have been postponed to allow the further investigations called for by 128 Australian scientists. It was agreed that the flexibility allowed in the EPBC Act to a Federal Minister will highly politicise such decisions. The NSW Trust will be contacting the Australian Council of National Trusts to seek the support of other state and territory National Trusts for changes to the Act, the extent of which will depend on the outcome of a current Federal Court action. The Federal Minister for the Environment and Water Resources has also been informed of the Trust’s concerns.
