As I write, I am enjoying a regional tour of the Central West through
Forbes, Parkes, Orange, Dubbo, Mudgee and Bathurst, meeting as many
supporters of the Trust as possible and familiarising myself with the
issues. Communities like these are the lifeblood of the Trust, and it is
inspiring to meet Committees, Friends and staff and learn more about your
vital work and thoughts on the Trust and its future. In mid October I hope
to travel to the Blue Mountains, and look forward to meeting as many of you
as possible then.
I’d like to draw your attention to the Rally Against Inappropriate
Development at Hyde Park, 10am Sunday 19 October (see below). The Trust
will join with other community groups to speak out about the major threats
heritage throughout NSW now faces from inappropriate development. Please
come along and lend your voice to the growing chorus of concern which is
saying “enough is enough” on sites from Currawong, to Catherine Hill Bay,
to Eveleigh, to Ku-ring-gai. Our warm thanks also to the Catherine Hill Bay
community for their $5,000 donation to the Trust’s Catherine Hill Bay
Fighting Fund. We will continue to work with the community to oppose the
inappropriate development of this irreplaceable heritage site.

Join
the RAID – Rally Against Inappropriate Development: Sunday 19 October
Join the National Trust and the Friends of Currawong to help save
Currawong. Unions NSW is selling this idyllic worker’s holiday retreat on
Pittwater to developer Eco Villages for $15 million. So far, only a deposit
has been paid. However rezoning and subdivision plans, if approved by the
Planning Minister, will see the public excluded from Currawong as it is
turned into an exclusive enclave for the wealthy. The proposed development
will be at least ten times the current footprint. Show you care – join the Rally Against
Inappropriate Development on Sunday 19 October, from 10am at Hyde Park
(near St James station). Hear Jack Mundey, the Friends of Currawong and
other NSW community groups who are fed up with the development threatening
our coastline and destroying bushland, heritage and communities.

Catherine
Hill Bay
The Catherine Hill Bay Progress Association recently made a generous
donation of $5,000 to the National Trust’s Fighting Fund, to help us
campaign against overdevelopment at Catherine Hill Bay and other heritage
significant places at risk. In a letter to its supporters, the CHB Progress
Association urged others to support the Trust and to donate. “While the
National Trust has very broad membership, it relies solely on donations and
is not funded by any government agency. It is currently fighting against
several major developments that threaten the cultural and physical heritage
of NSW.” The National Trust would like to thank the Catherine Hill Bay
Progress Association for their donation. The Trust will continue to fight
for the protection of Catherine Hill Bay and other areas at risk across
NSW.

Help
us complete urgent conservation work on Saumarez Homestead
The magnificent Saumarez Homestead in Armidale, now over 170 years old, needs
your help. This spectacular grazing property, first occupied by European
settlers in the 1830s, comprises over 10 hectares of sweeping agricultural
lands. It includes an Edwardian homestead, gardens, historic farm
buildings, and a large collection of contents. The estate is an
irreplaceable gem, deeply symbolic of our shared history and our heritage
of rural colonial life. But like any large, multifaceted site of this
heritage value and vintage, it requires expensive, ongoing care. As a charity with no on-going
government funding we appeal to you for support to carry
out much needed work on the vital elements that make up Saumarez. Making a
donation is easy – donate

National Trust honours Nancy-Bird Walton
Trust President, Dr Zeny Edwards and Trust Centre staff had the pleasure
of hosting a morning tea honouring National Trust Living Treasure
Nancy-Bird Walton on Friday 12 September. Nancy-Bird is a pioneer aviator
and Australia’s first woman pilot. Taught to fly by Charles
Kingsford-Smith, she gained her license in 1933 and in her own Gipsy Moth
provided air ambulance service to remote rural communities. She delighted
staff with many stories, and talked with pride about establishing the
Australian Women Pilots’ Association and competing three times in the
trans-America flying race the ‘Powder Puff Derby, in which she was the
first non-American to win a trophy. Now in her 90s, she maintains close
ties with the world of aviation. Later this month she will christen the new
Qantas A380 Airbus which will carry her name.
