February 2009 / Issue #42

I firmly believe the future success of The National Trust of Australia, whether it is New South Wales or elsewhere in Australia, is listening to those around us. Our loyal members, volunteers and hard working staff are one such audience, which I why I’ve been to see so many of you over the last few months.

Another key audience is our partners, such as EnergyAustralia and the New South Wales Department of Planning Heritage Branch through to the many people and organisations who give their expertise and time to us pro-bono. I have been amazed by the large number of people who support us in that way. You might think I’m thinking of those who’ve been helping us develop our new 20/20 strategy. I am, but I am also thinking of Richard Dinham who is helping us with pro-bono architectural advice at Everglades and Woodford Academy.

Then I think about our other partners, those like minded organisations and individuals who want to partner us to reach a broader audience. One such organisation is Youth Hostel Association Australia. I met the CEO Julian Ledger in early February and he told me about the new Hostel they are building in Sydney’s Rocks. They are building a 106 room Hostel on a historical site of early colonial life and they will be opening much of the dig remains to public view when the project is completed late in 2009. This project and in fact their regional spread has a great number of synergies with us at The National Trust and I hope to build on our existing relationship, consisting of reciprocal discounts and promotion, more and more into the future.

As you will see in this edition of e-news we are continuing to advocate, conserve and educate across the State and there are many events and fundraisers all supporting this wonderful organisation as Australia and the World increasingly talks of ways of avoiding recession. Thank you for your support in these hard times and I hope you continue to enjoy the rest of the summer at some of our events.

John Neish
Executive Director.
