April 2009 / Issue #44

In March I had the pleasure of attending both the Norman Lindsay Festival of Children’s Literature and the 175th Anniversary celebrations at Lindesay. I thoroughly enjoyed both events and am again grateful to our members, volunteers and staff who put these events together.

April is an incredibly busy month for events too. It is great to see over 300 events have been organised across New South Wales to support Our Place in Space themed Heritage Festival. There really is an event near you, so take a look at the link below to find out more.

As part of the Festival we have signature events such as the Heritage Awards. With 59 high calibre entries this year I can’t wait to hear who the winners are on 6 April. The Hon. Kristina Kenneally MP will be presenting the awards and will also be one of our three speakers at our Corporate Breakfast on 29 April. Brad Hazzard MP and Sylvia Hale MLC will be joining her on the speaking platform for what promises to be a real highlight of the month.

We are also trying something new this year on National Trust Day at Observatory Hill on 19 April. We’re having a bake off judged by the Sydney Morning Herald Good Food Guide’s Joanna Savill and with cake contributions coming from staff, volunteers and some of The Rocks’ famous pastry chefs.  Once judged slices of cake will be available to buy. There are also lots of events for all the family and discounted joint tickets to the S.H. Ervin Gallery’s Salon Des Refuses and the nearby Observatory.

I hope you enjoy reading some of our news and what this month has on offer from The National Trust.

CBD Metro – Heritage Issues
The Chief Executive of Sydney Metro has responded to National Trust concerns regarding the potential impacts of the proposed CBD Metro project. It has been clarified that there will be no direct impacts on St Phillips Church in Clarence Street  and that the southern views of the church would be considered in the design of any new station entrances. In terms of the Trust’s concerns for the Emil Sodersten designed apartment building at 7 Elizabeth Street, Sydney, it was acknowledged that this property is within a possible construction site. However the Trust was assured that this is only a preliminary position, a flexible approach to property requirements will be adopted, with a focus on minimising property acquisition for demolition.

Nightingale Wing, Sydney Hospital
The Trust was very pleased to hear that the historic anatomy collection at the Lucy Osburn/Nightingale Museum at Sydney Hospital will remain under the ownership of Sydney Hospital and will be called the 'Kanematsu Collection' in honour of the original benefactors, the Kanematsu Memorial Institute of Pathology that operated at Sydney Hospital from 1933 until 1982 and was the first medical institute in New South Wales. An application will be made for an Anatomy Licence for the whole collection and the housing of the specimens at Sydney Hospital. The specimens are to be used for teaching and research and be available for display.

Barrangaroo
The National Trust has commented on exhibited plans for the northern headland at Barangaroo (East Darling Harbour). The Trust is concerned at the likely impacts on the Millers Point & Dawes Point Village Precinct which was listed on the State Heritage Register in 2003. The National Trust Centre is part of this Precinct and is a neighbour to this development. The Barangaroo Headland proposed car park has intended access via Towns Place and this could generate large daily traffic volumes through sensitive areas of the State Heritage Register listed Area. The Trust has also urged that reinstatement or re-creation of the headland must be in harmony and complement other headlands in Sydney Harbour. The proposed steep grassed slope would be alien to the Sydney Harbour foreshores. Natural headlands around the Harbour are typified by native vegetation (predominantly eucalypts and figs) with a bushland shrub, leaf litter understorey and sandstone rock outcrops and cliff faces. The dominant colours are dull olive greens, browns, yellows and greys.

Vanderfield Building
Following expressions of concern to the Trust that the 1902 Vanderfield Building, Royal North Shore may be intended for demolition, the Trust is examining the history and significance of the building. The building has been identified as having 'State Significance' and housed the hospital’s first wards and emergency department. More than one-third of Its construction cost was funded through public donations.

The National Trust prepares 'shovel-ready' projects in hopes of funding

Following the $60 million secured for heritage in the Government's stimuls package, The National Trust NSW recently sent in a submission to both the State and Federal governments for projects that are ready to proceed at our properties. It is hoped that we will receive a portion of the money allocated for heritage, to go ahead with some of these works and help create jobs in the regions surrounding our properties. Some of the proposed works include the restoration of Saumarez Homestead in Armidale and its 1850s farm buildings; the replacement of the roof and restoration of the driveway and gardens at Tomago House in the Hunter Valley; urgent repairs and maintenance to the main building at Cooma Cottage in Yass; and urgent stabilistaion and repair of the front verandah at Vienna Cottage in Hunters Hill.

Lindesay celebrates 175 years
Her Excellency Professor Marie Bashir and Sir Nicholas Shehadie were guests of honour at a dinner party hosted by the President and Board of the National Trust (NSW), to mark the special anniversary at Lindesay, Darling Point on 18 March. The evening featured a Scottish theme to honour its first owner Campbell Drummond Ridell, and its many subsequent owners. Guest were welcomed by a piper on the lawn overlooking the harbour. Entertainment was provided by Robert McInnes and Rhonda Langford with fiddle and keyboard.

Play your part in Dubbo’s history
The National Trust of Australia (NSW) is working to conserve over 30 historic properties in its care and we need your help. Many of these properties were built in the mid 1800s and are reaching the point when significant amounts of money need to be spent on repair and maintenance. Without your support they will be lost for future generations. As a valued supporter of The National Trust and I hope you will be able to help us with our next major appeal in Dubbo.

Dundullimal Homestead in Dubbo is an unique asset in need of loving care and attention. We have received some grant funds but we need another $20,000. By helping us raise this money we could complete maintenance and resotration works on the hosue and stables complex, improve and expand the interpretation and education facilities at the property and begin critical adaptive reuse works on the shed.

Please click here to make a secure online donation to this appeal or call 02 9258 0156 to donate over the phone. Thank you sincerely for helping us to protect our Australian heritage through advocacy, conservation and education.

Andalucian Nights
On 6 March 2009, Friends of Grossman House and their guests enjoyed a thrilling evening of guitar music. In a sold out concert New Zealand guitarist, Miles Jackson, presented a program of classical and flamenco music entitled Andalucian Nights - the Music of Spain. It proved to a be an evening of great diversity from the Renaissance and Baroque music of Narvaez & Sanz to the much loved Recuerdos de la Alhambra by Tarrega as well as many traditional and exciting flamenco forms. His own composition, Andalucian Waltz was particularly well received. Miles played with virtuosity, warmth and passion displaying great affinity with the music. His brief explanations of the music and anecdotes about his time in Spain further enhanced the atmosphere of the evening. The audience was truly transported on a journey through Spain! The concert was held in the Mitchell Room of Brough House (Grossman’s twin property) which proved to be an ideal venue in size and sound for this program. Particularly pleasing for the Friends was the number of new (and younger) faces the program attracted which enabled us to introduce the National Trust to a wider and more diverse audience in the community. This was Miles’ second visit to Maitland. In 2007 he toured with quartet Madrugada - an equally inspiring evening. We eagerly look forward to his next visit and the wonderful music it will bring to our property.

Wingecarribee Shire Council Heritage Awards

As part of the National Trust Heritage Festival this year, Wingecarribee Shire Council is again conducting the biennial Heritage Awards. The aim of the competition is to recognise and promote good designs that enhance and maintain heritage buildings and conservation. The awards cover the categories of conservation, restoration and additions, traditional tradespersons, and sensitive/infill new buildings. The winners will be announced at a ceremony at the Berrima Court House Museum on 19 April. National Trust Board member, Alan Terrell will present the award for the best project from all categories.

Local Planning, Development and Heritage Protection in the Southern Highlands
The Southern Highland's Branch of the National Trust has been represented on the Wingecarribee Shire Council's Heritage Committee, now called a Working Group, since at least 2003. In that time, the Trust's unique perspective has assited Council in dealing with heritage policy and planning, and with many Development Applications (DA's), which have raised important heritage conservation issues across the Shire. This new Council has agreed to trial a system of electronic notification to members of the Heritage Working Group (inclduing the Trust) of DA's that relate specifically to items on the State and Local Heritage Registers. In this way the Trust should be alerted quickly to developments that might adversely affect the built heritage and landscape character in the Southern Highlands, which we are keen to protect. Where these DA's involve important local heritage protection issues, the committee will provide comments to Council. If you would like to inform the Southern Highlands Branch about a development in the area that is of heritage concern and you think the Trust should know about it, please contact Eric on 02 4877 1508.

 S.H. ERVIN GALLERY E-ART

2009 Salon des Refusés at the S.H. Ervin Gallery, Observatory Hill, Sydney - until 3 May

“Archibald’s loss is the Salon’s gain” Sydney Morning Herald, 14 March 2009.
“The Archibald doesn’t really have to be as dreary as it is. The Salon des Refusés at the S.H. Ervin Gallery has a number of more appealing pictures ...” The Australian, 21 March 2009.

For the past 18 years, S.H. Ervin Gallery’s guest selectors have gone behind the judging scene at the annual Archibald & Wynne Prizes, Art Gallery of New South Wales, to select an alternative exhibition of official entries rejected by the AGNSW. And each year the critics agree that the Salon exhibition often rivals the official prize show. This year from over 1400 artworks we selected 44 artworks: 21 Archibald and 23 Wynne - to present our 'best of the rest' overview exhibition. Salon des Refusés was initiated by the S.H. Ervin Gallery in 1992, in the tradition of the renegade French Impressionists of the 1860s who held a breakaway exhibition from the reactionary French Academy. The criteria for works selected for the annual Salon exhibition are quality, diversity, humour and innovation.

Selected artists are invited to discuss their work at the Gallery’s Public Program, hosted on Sundays at 3pm. Sunday 5 April - Professor Peter Pinson, Sunday 12 April - Leo Robba, Sunday 19 April (National Trust Day) - Mostyn Bramley-Moore, Sunday 26 April - Tom Carment. Talks free with exhibition admission.

Visitors to the annual Salon des Refusés exhibition can vote for their favourite artwork in the Holding Redlich People’s Choice Award.Gallery Hours: Tuesday – Sunday 11am – 5pm (closed Mondays, Closed Good Friday & Easter Monday, open: Easter Saturday & Easter Sunday). P: 02 9258 0173.

S.H. Ervin Gallery presents Ruark Lewis and Jo Holder - Artist and Curator Talk for 'Homelessness' - National Trust Centre, Observatory Hill - Monday 20 April, 6pm - 8pm

Over recent weeks visitors to S.H. Ervin Gallery and the National Trust Centre on Observatory Hill, Sydney, may have noticed something very different to the front of the Trust’s main building.  Atop our roof, a monumental frieze on the parapet of the National Trust spells out Homelessness - giant letters enabling easy reading by walkers & motorists crossing the Harbour Bridge.

Artist Ruark Lewis and writer/curator Jo Holder are undertaking a series of ephemeral art works that take up the idea and form of a public conversation. The issue under discussion here is the Government’s policy of the selling-off of Public Housing in inner city Sydney. ‘Housing the Seafaring Nation’ is a series of artworks attached to the facades of 2 key public buildings in Millers Point, at the foot of the Harbour Bridge and Homelessness atop the National Trust (NSW) Headquarters. &Jo Holder discuss their ongoing project; its themes, awareness campaign and responses thus far - while contemplating the logistics of installing the site specific artworks. Please RSVP to P: 02 9258 0150 or lhaynes@nationaltrust.com.au. Admission is free and includes refreshments.

About the artist - Sydney-based writer and visual artist, Ruark Lewis is renowned for his linking of art, poetics and political discussions. His method, which he calls 'transcription (drawing)', often takes the work of other artists - composers, poets, choreographers, anthropologists and fellow visual artists - and transforms it into abstracted text embodied in sculptural installations. Lewis has exhibited in Australia, England, Germany, Holland, Canada and in Spain. He created RAFT with Paul Carter for the Art Gallery of New South Wales and other commissioned works - for the 2000 Sydney Olympics, 2006 Biennale of Sydney and Performance Space at Carriageworks. In October 2008 he created a commissioned installation for Toronto’s Nuit Blanche festival. This is his first work drawing on local voices to create a history.

Win Film Tickets to Elegy
Directed by Isabel Coixet (My Life Without Me) and based on Pulitzer Prize winning author Philip Roth's novel The Dying Animal, Elegy features incredible performances from Academy Award winners Ben Kingsley and Penelope Cruz, alongside Patricia Clarkson, Peter Sarsgaard and Dennis Hopper. Filled with humanistic warmth, wry wit and erotic intensity, on the one hand Elegy is a passionate, indelible love story between a celebrated New York college professor and a young Cuban-born woman. Yet Elegy is also a complex, intelligent and unflinchingly honest meditation on lust, mortality, family, male friendship, intimacy and responsibility. The film has a real interest in adult ideas rarely seen in today's cinema, while remaining a powerful and moving dramatic work. In cinemas April 9, 2009.

Volunteer teachers needed…
If you have a teaching background, or have experience working with children, we would love to hear from you. Currently, many schools have rung, requesting talks about the National Trust. A background with the HSIE (Human Society in the Environment – K-6) and History syllabus (7-12) would be an advantage, but is not necessary. Please contact us if you are interested. It is necessary for any volunteer working with children to undergo a Working with Children Check. Please contact Jennifer Kapp, Human Resources Manager on 02 9258 0159 or hr@nationaltrust.com.au.
