The National Trust is running a series of Saturday gardening workshops at the Norman Lindsay Gallery, Faulconbridge.
Learn about weed control without chemicals, mulching, composting, native bush regeneration, and organic pest control.  Participants will also be taken on a guided tour through the Norman Lindsay Gallery, the landscaped garden estate (adorned with Norman Lindsay sculptures) and surrounding bushland.
The workshops will be held 10am – 5pm on Saturday 20 & 27 June. Lunch available at Lindsay Café.

Secrets of the Sun exhibition

Vienna Cottage, Hunters Hill – 12 and 26 April and 10 May

The Vienna Cottage Committee launched the 2009 Heritage Festival in Hunters Hill on Saturday 4 April with an exhibition in the cottage entitled Secrets of the Sun. The theme is the title of a 1984 book by Dr Ron Giovanelli , Australia's pre eminent Solar Physicist and a resident of Hunters Hill from 1948 until his death in 1984. As well as covering the research of Dr Giovanelli at the CSIRO Culgoora Observatory at Narrabri, displays will also consider man's early theories of the Sun, Galileo's observations, Captain Cook and the Transit of Venus, the history of the Riverview Observatory at St Ignatius College and Australia's contribution from the mid 19th century to theories on the solar cycle and climate change. The exhibition will continue at the cottage on 12 and 26 April and 10 May.

We invite you to celebrate our rich cultural heritage by being part of one of the longest running community festivals in New South Wales.

The theme of this year’s festival is ‘Our Place in Space’ and it will be celebrated at hundreds of fantastic events across metropolitan and regional NSW from Saturday 4 April to Sunday 19 April 2009.  These events will include a wide range of community activities including star gazing, discovery tours, art exhibitions, walks, talks, awards, photography displays and community fairs.

Meet at the Garrawarra Farm car park at 10am for the walk to Era or Burning Palms, OR, meet at 10am at garie Beach Surf Club for the walk to Little Garie.

A walk through the Royal National Park visitng NSW National Trust listed shack communitties at Burning Palms, Era and Little Garie Beaches. Visitors see insode the cabins and meet the locals and hear about their cabins and communitties. BBQ lunch provided. The walk to Burning Palms and Era is approx 2.5km along a provided. The walk to Burning Palms and Era is approx 2.5km along a bush track, the walk to Little Garie is approx 500m along a coastal track. Timeless: The art of Cressida Campbell

The work of Cressida Campbell is renowned for its depiction of subtle beauty in the everyday and commonplace. After studying abroad at the Yoshida Hanga Academy in Tokyo which enhanced her skills in manipulating the woodblock medium, Campbell developed a new technique of  mono-printing from hand painted wood-blocks.

China Australian connections at Government House & Eryldene

Australian visionary architect, artist and educator, William Hardy Wilson, left a remarkable legacy on Australian architectural history through his love and knowledge of Chinese culture. Government House ballroom plays hosts to speakers examining Hardy Wilson’s work and contemporary architecture in China today. Then travel by coach to Eryldene. Following lunch specialist scholars will lead tours of the house, teahouse and garden and discuss Hardy Wilson’s and Waterhouse’s passion for Chinese art, architecture, philosophy and plants.

Advanced Life Drawing Summer School

An advanced life drawing summer school will be held in the grounds of Norman Lindsay Gallery at Faulconbridge, with tutor Jeff Rigby.

On the Heysen Trail: Group Exhibition

The Heysen Trail, named after renowned artist Sir Hans Heysen (1877-1968) is one of the world's great long distance walks - extending 1,200 kilometres from Cape Jervis south of Adelaide to Parachilna Gorge in the north Flinders Ranges. In May 2008, leading Australian Artists Lucy Culliton, Elisabeth Cummings, Neil Fraser, David Keeling, Euan Macleod, Chris O'Doherty aka Reg Mombassa, Adrienne Richards, Leo Robba and David Usher travelled sections of the trail and captured their experiences.

Traditional Night Before Christmas

Friday, December 19, Miss Trail's House, Bathurst, 6pm

Join in robust singing of beloved Christmas carols and songs in the garden and paddock of the 1845 colonial house. This year's event will feature the Carillon Show Band, conducted by Wendy Zylstra. There will be special Christmas performances involving speech, drama and singing students coordinated by local teachers.

Miss Traill's House will be open to the public, with all rooms candlelit and decorated in Victorian style, the rooms will be festooned with greenery, popcorn garlands and old-fashioned ornaments. There will be children's Christmas craft activities, the delightful Super Santa Scavenger Hunt and a visit from Jolly Saint Nick himself. BBQ sausage/kebab sizzle available or bring picnic tea. Riverina and Murray River Adventure

October 10-17, 2008

Spend eight days in the Riverina and Murray River regions, including a visit to Wagga Wagga, the largest inland city in NSW and also a garden city, as well as Junee, Yass, Temora and Echuca. One highlight of the tour is the open day at the Aviation Museum at Temora where selections of aircraft, including the spitfire, are flown. The museum has the finest collection of flying historic aircraft in the world. Not to be missed is a cruise on a paddle-steamer along the Murray River at Echuca, once Australia's largest inland port during the 1800s.

The town is home to the largest collection of paddle-steamers in the world. Some of Australia's most dramatic river scenery is found along the Murray River. We also visit the Balaclava Gold mine, a chocolate and liquorice factory at Junee, and tour historic Lockhart, known as the 'verandah town' and once a favourite haunt of bushrangers

Women's Committee Forbes Weekend House Inspection

Following the discovery of a route across the Blue Mountains in 1813, Surveyor George Evans located a west-flowing river in 1815 which he called the Lachlan. Following Evans' track, in 1817 Surveyor General Oxley traced the course of the Lachlan through the present sites of Cowra and Forbes until his progress was halted by extensive swamps.

In 1835 (a dry year), anticipating an inland sea, Surveyor General Mitchell found fertile plains on the site of Oxley's swamps - and large herds of unregistered cattle. The age of the squatter had begun.

Discovery of gold on the Lachlan (1861), followed by many years of wool supremacy brought much wealth to the district. Today many handsome private homes and imposing public buildings which reflect the prosperity of the district in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries have been carefully preserved. They give the lonely riverside township of Forbes an enduring link with its past, while providing a focus for the surrounding district, now richly agricultural with pastoral industries thriving on the riverland.

Pamela Griffith - Orientalism: An Australian Artist's Perspective

Timed to coincide with the Beijing Olympics, internationally renowned artist Pamela Griffith’s exhibition, Orientalism: An Australian Artist’s Perspective, features Asian limited edition relief prints exploring the symbolism of the 12 Animals of the Zodiac.

Pamela carves the print blocks from wood in a style reminiscent of traditional Chinese art. The exhibition also includes a suite of coloured etchings based on the changing seasons and a series of dramatic Chinese inspired works combining gold and silver leaf with rich oils. A selection of her tools and materials used in printmaking will also be displayed.

Women's Committee Haberfield Day House Inspection

In the early twentieth century when Sydney was outgrowing the close terrace housing of the inner suburbs, Richard Stanton planned and developed the model Garden Suburb of Haberfield. Each house designed in the prevailing Queen Anne - Federation style was set in a large block in a tree-lined street, the whole providing a pleasant suburban lifestyle.

Having suffered neglect in the mid-twentieth century, Haberfield has now been rescued and revitalised by a community which recognises the architectural merit and lifestyle pleasures of this uniquely planned suburb. In 1978, Haberfield joined Paddington, Glebe and Hunters Hill as a National Trust classified suburb. A strong resident voice backed by the Trust achieved its listing on the register of the National Estate in 1990.

Designed by D Wormald in 1903 for G J Hall Esq, Company Director, this was one of the first houses built in Kingston STret in the Domestic Gothic Style. It is now a large, single story family home with beautiful gardens on two sides, carefully restored to its original condition.

Richard Woldendorp is a well-known and respected photographer and is acknowledged as Australia’s eminent practitioner of aerial photography.  His photographs of the environment taken from the air have established a fresh visual vocabulary for the Australian landscape.  This unique perspective reveals diverse landscapes and ancient forms, and Woldendorp’s images eloquently capture the vastness and solitude of the land from above.

This exhibition acknowledges Woldendorp’s important contribution to Australian landscape photography over the past 50 years and has been selected by eminent art critic John McDonald and photographer R. Ian Lloyd.

Flinders Ranges, Lake Eyre and the Cooper

Richard Quilty's very memorable 17-day tour ranges from the green pastures of the Clare Valley to the stony gibber plains around Cooper Creek, reminiscent of the ill-fated journey of Bourke and Wills in 1860-1861.

This tour is by coach from Sydney, staying at Broken Hill for two nights, then exploring the Flinders Ranges and Clare Valley. We continue on to the outback through Port Augusta visiting the Wadlata Outback Centre, and continue on to Woomera, touring the copper and uranium mine at Roxby Downs before travelling to Maree on the Oodnadatta track, our base for visiting Lake Eyre.

We follow the Strzelecki track to Innamincka on the Cooper Creek to visit the Digtree, and cruise on the creek at sunset. Then it's over the rolling sandhills to Cameron's Corner, through the Sturt National Park, Tibooburra and White Cliffs, the underground opal town.

Cazneaux at Home

14 June - Eryldene, 17 McIntosh Street, Gordon

Eryldene was popular as a subject for photographers in the 1920s and 1930s. Amongst those who were drawn to the grace and beauty of this significant property was Harold Cazneaux, who produced more than 100 photographs of the house and garden. An exhibition of the Cazneaux photographs from the Eryldene Archives, rarely displayed, will be presented. At 2pm each day a guest speaker will discuss the importance of these works to the development of modern photography.

Walking Tour of Long Reef Aquatic Reserve

Join a small guided tour on World Environment Day to explore at low tide the wonders of Long Reef Aquatic Reserve on the Northern Beaches. Cox's Road Walk

Join the Blue Mountains Branch in a walk down the historic Cox's Road from Mt York to Hartley Vale. This is the most significant remnant of the road which Cox and his band of convicts built in 1814. The descent is quite steep in parts and you will need good walking shoes. A hot soup lunch will be provided and return bus to Mt York.

"Lines in the Landscape" by Fiona Davies & Patricia Prociv – Artists (Re) Interpreting History

10 May - Parramatta Park between the gate house and the front garden of Old Government House

This ephemeral public art project highlights part of Parramatta’s formal town plan at the time of Governor Hunter in 1799.

The lines mark the location of several convict cottages and gardens on the sightline from the front door of the Governor’s house leading to George Street.

The lines draw attention to the life and times of establishing European settlement in Parramatta helping us understand that the use of the space was not always as it is now.

Over time the work will fade and disappear until fragments that may be bewildering are all that remain.

Observing Living History

Observing Living History includes archival video footage documenting the effects of the construction of the Sydney Harbour Bridge on local residents and the green bans of the 1970s. The exhibition is sponsored by the City of Sydney, with assistance from the Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority.

See the site of the mason-yard where Robertson and John O'Kelly worked, with examples of their delicate cherub and floral grave-markers. Since the theme of this year's festival is "Our Place" it seems appropriate that there shiould be a talk about Aboriginals of the Sydney and Parramatta region. Keith Vincent Smith isa PhD student at Macquarie University. He is the author of two books, and a co-curator of an exhibition at the Mitchell Library. He will speak about and illustrate Aboriginal bark huts, canoes and baskets of the region. The talk will be followed by refreshments. Organised by Vienna Cottage.

Walking Tour of Glebe

13 May, 10am - Meet at corner of Glebe Point Rd a to see the vision of its planners.

Join us for a walking tour of one of Sydney's oldest and most historic suburbs. Walk through the Toxteth Estate which serve lunch if you want to stay on after the walk is over. Learn something of the history of several other of the grand old houses which have been saved around Glebe Point. The walk is gently undulating and will take between two to three hours according to pace, which is designed to be very moderate. Led Zeppelin photos set to rock after 35 years'
The Led Zeppelin World Tour is an exhibition of documentary photographs and contemporary artworks.  
Rarely-seen images by rock photographer Ted Harvey documenting Led Zeppelin’s 1972 Sydney concert will be feature in this exhibition. The exhibition also presents responses from contemporary artists Adam Cullen, Nicholas Harding, Geoff Harvey, Euan Macleod, Lucille Martin, Alan Jones, Craig Waddell, Chris O’Doherty (aka Reg Mombassa), Janice Raynor and Gareth Sansom.  This exhibition supports RockPhotoAid.com – a charity helping children who live in extreme poverty in Brazil.

Well-known Sydney artist Jane Bennett will be exhibiting her latest show Trains, Cranes & Ships: Eveleigh Railway Workshops and the Hungry Mile at the National Trust Centre from 1-14 December, 2007. Jane’s most recent paintings focus on the Eveleigh Railway Workshops in Redfern, the Hammerhead Crane at Garden Island and the Hungry Mile at East Darling Harbour.

Drumming it into our heads….Canadian storyteller to tell tales at Experiment Farm Cottage

Call it a ‘tellabration:’ The National Trust of Australia (NSW) and Australian Storyteller’s Guild will present a special storytelling session for families with Canadian ceremonial drummer, singer and storyteller, Denise Miller.

The event takes place in the gardens at the National Trust’s Experiment Farm Cottage on Saturday, 27 October. Denise will be joined by other members of the Australian Storyteller’s Guild with the program running from 1.00 pm to 3.30 pm that afternoon.  Click here for more

National Trust Schools Competition winners announced
This year’s Schools Competition drew a record number of entries, with over 200 submissions and 1500 students across NSW getting involved. 46 finalist entries were chosen by our judging panel across the five entry categories of Human Society and Its Environment for Years 3 and 4, Human Society and Its Environment for Years 5 and 6, Secondary History, Secondary Geography and Secondary Art.

The Exhibition of Finalists in the fourth annual National Trust (NSW) Photography Competition, proudly sponsored by Georges Electronics, was opened on 19 July to a crowd of excited photographers and their friends and family from all over NSW.  Of nearly 200 photographs that were entered in the competition at seven different regional properties in NSW, 23 photographs were selected for the Exhibition of Finalists, from which an overall state winner was chosen.

National Trust and Storytelling Guild work together to bring back the art of storytelling to the masses

The two non-profit organisations have dreamed up ‘Tales and Tunes at the Trust’, a program of storytelling and music for both children and adults. The program gets underway in late July at three National Trust properties.
The sessions take place at the Norman Lindsay Gallery, Faulconbridge (second Saturday of the month), Experiment Farm Cottage, Harris Park (fourth Saturday of the month) and Vienna Cottage (third Sunday of the month) from now until March 2008. The stories will focus on tales from the past, from long ago, from faraway and include ‘local colour’ stories from the Blue Mountains, Hunters Hill and Parramatta.

Everglades - the world famous National Trust gardens in Leura - is once again celebrating the spring equinox with its ‘Cirquinox’, a colourful interactive circus festival featuring aerial acts, stage shows, roving performers, workshops, video installations, face painting, circus stalls and refreshments. From here to Eternity: contemporary tapestries from the Victorian Tapestry Workshop 29 June- 12 August 2007

Established in 1976, the workshop boasts an international reputation for the freshness, vitality and technical excellence of its hand-woven tapestries. Unique to the workshop is that the skilled weavers are also trained artists including Angela Brennan, Mike Brown, Jon Cattapan, Alun Leach-Jones, Reg Mombassa, Gareth Sansom and Martin Sharp..

Boynton Beach Club Preview Screening
Thursday night’s special preview fundraising screening of Boynton Beach Club was a huge hit with National Trust members and guests, with over 120 people arriving at Dendy Opera Quays to support the National Trust at this event.
Guests drank champagne and ate strawberries in the Dendy foyer overlooking the harbour, before going inside to enjoy the movie. A hilarious and sometimes touching film, Boynton Beach Club explored the ups and downs, friendships and romantic exploits of a Florida retirement community.
Huge thanks to Hopscotch Films and Dendy cinemas for their support and assistance to the National Trust in facilitating this event.
