National Trust Heritage Festival 2007
Be part of the National Trust Heritage Festival celebrations!
Festival Theme
Brought together under the theme of Places in Context: Cultural & Natural Landscapes, the Festival will look at our evolving urban and rural landscapes and specifically explore the community interaction with particular places with reference to urban development, historical significance and what factors make up an area’s identity. We may wish to question our occupation of the landscape, our use of green space and sustainability.
Key concepts will include - social interaction, multiculturism, the shaping of the natural/cultural aspect of an area, cultural identity of a place including cuisine and the built environment, as well as landscapes as a link to industries eg agricultural, maritime and viticulture.
Registering an event
By registering your event with the National Trust Heritage Festival, your activity and organisation will be promoted free of charge via the Trust website and within the Festival Program, 35,000 of which are distributed to Trust members, event organisers and the general public through motor registries, councils, libraries, visitor information offices, National Trust properties and cultural organisations. By linking your event to the National Trust’s theme, you ensure you are part of a state-wide public relations and marketing driven initiative.
Event suggestions include:
- Talks/lectures looking at our occupation and interaction with our landscape (built and natural), future urban expansion, urban planning and ecological sustainability
- Exhibitons and historical displays of the evolution of an area
- Walking tours of our interaction with the landscape in relation to its natural features (eg a link to industries – how the accidental discovery of the Hunter River and an abundance of coal and cedar forrests has seen Newcastle grow from penal settlement to industrial centre to modern city )
- Tours of hidden city landscapes – underground tunnels, transport networks
- Educational competitions
- Urban precinct tours
- Heritage discovery tours looking at the context of a suburb/town
- A celebration of an area’s cultural landscape eg Leichhardt as ‘Sydney’s little Italy’, City of Sydney’s China Town or the pattern of migration in places such as Griffith or the Riverina, or the settlement of Germans in Berrima linking back to WWI.
Supported by an extensive public relations campaign, the program of events plays a key role in fostering an appreciation of our heritage and all it has to offer the wider community.
