An annual event to remember the Dharawal people killed in the massacare on 17th April 1816. It acknowledges the significant contribution made by the Dharrawal people to this area and their continuing presence with us today. Both spiritual and through their descendants. Prior to the ceremony, people have an opportunity to talk with descendants and local Aboriginal community members at a sausage sizzle lunch. Involves short walk to ceremony. Appropiate footwear, sunscreen recommended. Seating is limited so bring fold up chair if you wish.

Talk: Linden Observatory - A legacy for restoration

The speaker, Ian Bridges, is a member of the Linden Observatory Museum Association and a trustee of the site. Although the late Ken Beames was not an astronomer by training he was, in a lifetime, able to produce a 60cm reflecting telescope with full operating machinery and dome together with a comprehensive auxiliary workshop. The campaign for restoration continues. Refreshments from 5.30pm, parking adjacent.

Under Southern Skies: Ku-ring-gai’s Tulkiyan
Tulkiyan House Museum, 707 Pacific Hwy
Our house tours and exhibition will focus on the migration expierence of the Donaldson and Scott families who left Scotland in the mid nineteenth century to settle, and later prosper, in Australia. William and Mary Scott Donnaldson commissioned prominent architect B.J Waterhouse to design this two storey residence in arts and crafts style in 1913. Now state listed, Tulkiyan House Museum is a rare intact example of its kind, where furniture, furnishings & family artefacts remain in situ. Accessible only by guided tour, duration one hour. No wheelchair access. No disabled access to second storey. On-street parking. Gordon station 5 mins walk.

Featuring personal accounts and photos, this publication demonstrates how volunteering builds strong, vibrant networks in the community, at the same time as bringing great personal satisfaction to each individual. Living Heritage – Historic Shacks Walk
Garrawarra Farm Park
A walk through the Royal National Park visitng NSW National Trust listed shack communitties at Burning Palms, Era and Little Garie Beaches. Visitors see insode the cabins and meet the locals and hear about their cabins and communitties. BBQ lunch provided. The walk to Burning Palms and Era is approx 2.5km along a provided. The walk to Burning Palms and Era is approx 2.5km along a bush track, the walk to Little Garie is approx 500m along a coastal track. Please bring walking shoes, swimming gear, bottled water and sunscreen. A day permit must be purchased from the Royal National Park Wildlife Service for $11 per vehicle.

From William Dawes to James Dunlop: The Founding & Demise of Australia’s first main Observatories
Henry Kendall Cottage & Museum, 25-27 Henry Kendall St
James Dunlop, protege of Gov. Brisbane, recipient of the prestigious gold medal of the Royal Astronomical Society in 1828, and Superintendent of Parramatta Observatory for 7 years, retired to his property on Brisbane Water in 1847 and is buried in Kincumber cemetery. The museum is proud of its connection with Dunlop and has arranged an illustrated talk by Des Barrett, a curator at the Powerhouse Museum, on European Astronomy in early Australia. The museum and cottage will also be open with particular emphasis on a display of numerous items made by/belonging to James Dunlop. Limited numbers. Wheelchair access and ample parking.

2009 exhibition - Kenmore: significant heritage. A close look at the hospital village designed by government architect, W.L. Vernon. The Hospital opened in Janurary 1895 as the first of the country asylums. An examination of the detail in the architecture and its use as a state of the art psychiatric hospital. As well as the exhibition, there are historical tours of the upper hospital grounds (tour time 1.5hrs). Wheelchair access, parking available, refreshments available.

Friends of the Regal Film Screening - 'The Overlanders'. This classic 1946 film seems to have been an inspiration for the recent Baz Luhrman film ‘Australia’. ‘The Overlanders’ is a factual account (with fictional twists) about a hazardous 2000 mile cattle drive across northern Australia beginning in 1942 and lasting 15 months.

Amazingly varied collection of artefacts from convict and early settlement times which document the opening up by road and rail of lands to the west.
