National Trust Heritage Festival 2010
Primary and Secondary National Trust Schools Competition 2010
This annual competition inspires students to celebrate their local heritage by reflecting the 2010 Festival theme of ‘The Making of Our Nation’. Open across three subject areas:
The competition criterion encourages students to look at ‘The Making of Our Nation’ with 2010 being the 200th anniversary of the commencement of Governor Lachlan Macquarie’s 12 year tenure as the 5th Governor of the Colony of New South Wales. Governor Macquarie made an outstanding and extensive contribution to the growth of the State of New South Wales and his many legacies endure. He is widely recognised as being responsible for transforming the new colony from a penal settlement to a flourishing society. This was ultimately achieved through his visionary leadership and strength of character. During his governorship, Macquarie instigated hundreds of public works programs leading to the introduction of churches, schools, hospitals, roads, banks, newspapers, agricultural developments, racing and sporting carnivals, architects and surveyors, festivals and celebrations and charitable institutions along with many other ventures. He established solid foundations for an economically independent civilised society. The competition guidelines are put together by the National Trust in association with the NSW Department of Education and Training, to ensure all criteria are in line with the 2010 syllabus. This is a term two competition with entries due on Friday 25 June 2010. The overall winner in each category will receive $250 for their school, as well as individual prizes. Comprised of education experts, the judging panel will join special guest personalities for the prize giving ceremony to be held in August 2010 at the National Trust Centre, Observatory Hill, Sydney.
