The Road to the Illawarra – Kiama, Gerringong and Gerroa Two centuries ago, timber getters started cutting cedar from the dense forests of the Illawarra to ship to Sydney for the building of fine homes. As the land was cleared, dairying, the planting of cereal crops and tobacco, and quarrying of basalt gravel soon followed. Many heritage buildings still remain and, with the newly opened road, the area is an easy 90 minute drive from Sydney. |
