The House and Estate

The Estate of 44 acres sits within a large sweeping bend in the Hunter River . Redolent with history , the estate bred a Melbourne Cup winner in the 1860s. Historical information is available for guests to contemplate. Distinguished by large exotic trees planted in the Victorian era creating the country park like grounds, this is a substantial and handsome early Victorian country home. From sandstone verandahs the House enjoys panoramic views from Brokenback to Barrington over rich Hunter River countryside grazed by a Fresian dairyherd.

The House is available to individual groups to enjoy the rare opportunity of staying in an authentic heritage listed property with excellent modern comforts in a relaxing, rural setting. The courtyard garden with original Corinthian-columned Victorian pergolas and wide verandahs creates an excellent setting for outdoor entertaining and BBQs. Formal dining can be enjoyed in the gracious dining room with seating capacity for up to 16 persons.

  

Located within easy reach of Broke/Fordwich and Pokolbin vineyards and wineries the guests can decide whether to nestle into a weekend of gourmet cooking in the fully equipped gourmet kitchen, with the wine and the good company they provide or request additional services such as a grocery shopping service, gourmet prepared meals, full catered dining, brass bands or dining musicians, wine tastings, cooking demonstrations, hot air ballooning, golfing and wine country bus services.

  



THE ACCOMMODATION

The House is available as a self catered letting for up to 12 persons.

Sleeping Accommodation

Separate rooms are available for up to 4 couples and 1 single person . The fifth and sixth couples would use the quality sofa beds in each of the reading and living rooms.

There are 2 queen bedrooms , and 1 double bedroom upstairs. There is one queen bedroom and one quality double sofa bed in the reading room downstairs. An additional quality double sofa bed is available in the living room downstairs.

Bathrooms and Linen

Currently 3 bathrooms are available - 2 Upstairs and 1 Downstairs both with full bath, overhead showers, hand basins and toilets. All linen is provided . A laundry is available to guests if required.

  



Living

The house is furnished in a comfortable period/provincial style. The walls are hung with contemporary art mixing with period prints and photography.

A living room includes an open fire, views over the countryside two sofas, coffee table and side table , two lounge chairs and two provincial chairs with space to introduce more chairs if required providing seating capacity for the household.. The Dining Room with CD/Stereo system and two provincial walnut tables has a seating capacity for 16 persons. A chess table and games are available along with coffee table books , maps and local history pamphlets.

The Library/Reading Room houses a substantial collection of books, maps, jigsaw puzzles ,and board games as well as a puppet theatre and television.

 


  



Entertaining

Large shady verandahs and courtyard / pergola areas have table settings for outdoor breakfasts,morning /afternoon teas, BBQs and evening meals. Ball Games including Volley Ball, Shuttlecock and Croquet can be enjoyed on the substantial lawns. The Upper Front Verandah has cane easy chairs, is accessed from elegant French Doors and has elevated sweeping views over the country side. Smoking can be enjoyed on the verandahs.

Kitchen and BBQ

Gourmet oven, dishwasher, microwave, blender/food processor, chefs knives and utensils, stainless steel saucepans, frypan, baking dishes, heavywok, etc platters, quality cutlery, glassware and white china for 12 persons. There is an excellent gas BBQ.

Feasts and Special Occasions

Guests can enjoy their stay by partaking of feasts they prepare themselves in the gourmet kitchen or may wish to leave the preparation and serving of great food to Hambledon Hill House's excellent catering partners. Having agreed your menu from a range of gourmet selections the most onerous task is selecting your own wines to enjoy with the feast- the chefs and their attentive waiter staff take care of the rest.

Hambledon Hill House guests who are hosting special occasion get togethers - reunions, birthdays, anniversaries - delight in the luxury of the catering partners taking care of the details so that they can concentrate on their celebration - our catering partners provide great food and great service (and at great value!)

"The Cook's Reprieve" - Ians Kitchen Turramurra. There is a further alternative for those travelling through Sydney to HHH. Ian's Kitchen will prepare fabulous dishes/full menus for you to collect en route from Sydney to the Hunter. The dishes come well packed for the journey and with full serving instructions - allowing you to miraculously create everything from gourmet breakfasts to five course dinner parties - effortlessly!

Travel Routes

By Car - The House is easily found just 7kms off the New England Hwy heading north out of Singleton (see mudmap below). The Sydney City Centre to Singleton car journey is typically 2 hours 45 mins taking the signs to Cessnock then routes to the New England Hwy either through Rothbury and Branxton or via Broke Road then Hermitage Road joining the Hwy at Belford.

To drive the picturesque winding route to Singleton through the Bucketty Way, along Yango National Park and forest through historic Wollombi, Paynes Crossing and Broke take Calga/Peats Ridge turn from Freeway. Take signs to Peats Ridge (not Gosford) and then Wisemans Ferry, Wollombi and Broke, to meet the Putty Road to Singleton .This scenic route does not necessarily take longer but is not to be recommended in wet or dark.

By Train - CountryLink runs the XPT from Sydney through Singleton. This service is just under 3 hours scheduled once everyday departing in the morning (9.35 am as per February 2001 timetable) arriving lunchtime (12.45pm as per February 2001 timetable). Return service to Sydney depart Singleton early afternoon (1.54pm as per February 2001 timetable)

By Air -There are regular flights to Singleton from Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport.

Transfers from Rail Station and Airport to the house can be arranged if required.

B & B

Hambledon Hill House welcomes B&B guests who enjoy elegant surroundings and country hospitality. B&B guests are given the exclusion and privacy of Queen Room with french doors onto enormous verandahs with sweeping rural views. B&B guests have their own dedicated bathroom. Delicious country gourmet breakfasts are served on either the sanstone flagged verandah or in the Main Hall overlooking the panoramic views. Guests can retreat to chandelier lit sitting rooms.

The pleasures of the House include country park style gardens, plentiful and colouful birdlife, a well stocked Library, croquet, country lawn tennis court, games, outdoor spa and open fire in winter.

BOOKING TERMS AND CONDITIONS

  • Tentative bookings will be held for three (3) working days unless otherwise agreed.
  • Confirmations made on receipt of a 50% deposit.
  • Cancellations: Deposits less 10% fee can only be returned if another replacement booking is confirmed for same dates.
  • Balance is due not less than fourteen (14) days prior to booking.

The House is available for B&B bookings and for independant group bookings. For B&B Tariffs see above.

Weekends

1st weekend in December to last weekend in February $1100.00 and $1300.00 from 1st weekend in March to last weekend in November for up to 8 persons with extra persons 9 to up to 14 being $44 per nightper person (2 nights min).

Long Weekends

$1650-00 per long weekend (3 nights)for up to 8 persons *

Midweek

$450 per night (2 nights min) for up to 8 persons*

Full Week

$1650-00 per week (6 nights) for up to 8 persons other than weeks commencing or concluding with a holiday long weekend. ($1900.00 inclusive of long weekend) *

Additional persons up to maximum of 14

$44-00 per night per person (2 nights min)

*These tariffs apply for up to 8 persons. Per person fee in addition up to 14.

Given the heritage nature of the house and the quality and nature of the facilities and furnishings a $500-00 security deposit is required as a precaution against loss / damage excess cleaning or waste away charges. This deposit is fully refundable if the house and contents do not suffer loss/damage or if excessive cleaning or waste away charges are not incurred.

Please note that the house should be left in a good , clean state of order with all garbage waste deposited in the 2 large green wheelie bins provided (near the entrance to the House yard).
