2009 celebrates a twenty year association between the Portia Geach Memorial Award and National Trust S.H. Ervin Gallery.

S.H. Ervin Gallery has hosted this award exhibition for the past two decades of its 44 years.

Portia Geach Memorial Award is Australia’s most significant prize for celebrating the creativity of portraiture by Australian women artists. The award, now worth $18,000, continues to play a major role in developing the profiles of many female artists.

Portia Geach Memorial Award was first given in 1965 to Jean Appleton for her self portrait. Last year’s winner was Canberra based artist, Jude Rae with Self Portrait 2008: (the year my husband left me).  Previous winners include Jenny Sages, Lucy Culliton,  Wendy Sharpe,  Nerissa Lea,  Maryanne Coutts,  Elisabeth Cummings,  Kim Spooner, Nancy Borlase, Margaret Woodward, Margaret Ackland, Jenny Watson, Christine Hiller, Brenda Humble, Ena Joyce, Maria Cruz & Rosemary Valadon.

The relationship between National Trust S.H. Ervin Gallery and Portia Geach Memorial Award is further enhanced by the announcement of a significant donation of $5000, from Trust Company of Australia, the trustee of the award, for the artist who wins this year’s People’s Choice Award.

From a record submission of 328 entries – 51 works have been selected for the 2009 award exhibition by judging panel Michael Desmond (Senior Curator, National Portrait Gallery) and artists Lindy Lee and Imants Tillers.
