Travellers Tales

Cooma Cottage was built for pioneering pastoralist Cornelius O’Brien in 1835. Between 1839 and 1873 it was home to Hamilton Hume, Australia’s great overland explorer.

In Travellers Tales, students become part of an exploration team led by Hume and Hovell to find an overland route to Port Phillip Bay in Victoria.

Students use their own observations and written accounts by Hume, Hovell and the convicts to reflect on their experiences along the way. At a bush camp by the river students discuss the impact of exploration on the natural environment, Aboriginal people and colonial expansion.

The program also includes an exploration of the house and stables from the different perspectives of Hume’s niece and her servants.

Students can:

OBSERVE the nature of continuity and change, over time, on a natural and built environment.

IDENTIFY different experiences of individuals involved with, and effected by, colonial exploration and expansion.

USE primary sources in order to reconstruct an historical event.

UNDERSTAND the nature and significance of an Australian heritage site.
