This timber slab cottage, erected on sandstone foundations, is in the village of Terara, in the Shoalhaven region of NSW.

It is set on 2 ½ acres, which was part of 640 acres granted to William and James Graham in 1843. It was used as police quarters and the diaries of Sergeant Bernard Brown are held in the Mitchell library, Sydney. Entries give an insight into the early days in Terrara (now spelt Terara). Of local significance the cottage is listed in a heritage study by Shoalhaven City Council (heritage study no. NB 155).

Construction is of vertical timber slabs with narrow sealing strips on the exterior. The original timber shingles are covered with a galvanised iron roof. Timber used includes local blackbutt and red cedar. There are two fireplaces, one with a slow combustion stove.

The back of the home features sapling rafters. The kitchen has recycled blackbutt timber benchtops and a fire clay sink. The bathroom has a claw-foot bath. There is one room used as a bedroom.

Outbuildings include the timber slab stables with timber and stone flooring, and other sheds.

The soil is rich and deep. At the back of the house are circular vegetable garden beds. There are many metres of high trellises used for annual vegetables.

There are windbreaks of mostly native species including melaleucas, grevilleas and banksias. A rainforest area of plantings including lemon aspen, lemon myrtle and Davidson’s plum. Also, there are apple and pear trees, banana, babaco and other food plants.

Situated 2km to the amenities of Nowra and less than 20 mins drive to Berry, Kangaroo Valley and the wonderful beaches and forests of the South Coast. Two and a half hours south of Sydney.
