History
"The Vulcan" is named after the Roman god of fire, and is usually associated with the melting of iron to make both weapons and agricultural implements.
Built in 1894, The Vulcan Hotel provided high class accommodation and drinks for travellers in the city district. Those in particular who were mainly involved with the storage of wool, shipping and the iron works that were all in the vicinity of the hotel.
Formerly famous as a venue for jazz bands, it was also known as a great 'watering hole' for locals and students alike. The Vulcan is fondly remembered for both its bands and great atmosphere throughout the many years it traded as a pub/hotel.
At the end of 2002 the brand new "Vulcan" was born. After extensive rebuilding and remoulding, and with a multi-million dollar refurbishment to the inside of this heritage listed building, it now provides the best contemporary accommodation in the city. And this at a really great price.

The Vulcan Hotel is at 500 Wattle Street, on the corner of
Mary Ann Street.
From the City or Darling Harbour to the Vulcan Hotel:
The Vulcan is not hard to find, if you remember to take into account the one way system. You can only approach the hotel end of Mary Ann Street from Wattle Street. If you find yourself on Harris Street, turn into Thomas Street and then right into Wattle Street.
From The Sydney Harbour Bridge to The Vulcan Hotel:
- Cross bridge and keep right. Do not go into the city.
- As you go down you will come to a fork in the road, on your right is the aquarium. Fork right.
- After you have gone through four sets of traffic lights, you’ll come to a junction where you can only turn left or right.
- Turn right, at those lights
- You should now be on Pier Street.
- At the next set of lights, turn left onto Harris Street.
- At the third set of lights, turn right into Thomas Street.
- At the end of that road, turn right into Wattle Street.
- After 20 metres the hotel is facing you, on the corner of Mary Ann Street.
- Turn into Mary Ann Street, register and ask for directions to the our secure parking.
